La Fontaine was inspired by the fabulists of Antiquity and in particular Aesop, to write the Fables which made his fame. La Fontaine's Fables are still considered one of the greatest masterpieces of French literature. This audio includes: The Crow and the Fox; The Cicada and the Ant; The Frog who wants to be as big as the Ox; The Hare and the Tortoise; The Town Rat and the Field Rat; The Fox and the Stork. The author Jean de la Fontaine was born in 1621. He studied Latin and very little Greek, and in 1649 obtained a lawyer diploma from the Parliament of Paris. At 26, he married 14-year-old Marie Héricart. This marriage is not very happy: La Fontaine is neither a good father nor a good husband. In 1652 he entered the administration of Water and Forests in Château-Thierry. An excellent observer of rustic life and nature, he will bring his observations to life later in his Fables. In 1658 he moved to Paris, where he will spend the rest of his life. He begins to write verses, drawing inspiration from Greek and Latin authors. During his long literary career, he wrote not only fables, but tales, an opera, poems. La Fontaine, admitted to the Académie Française in 1684, died in Paris in 1695.
